It was just a matter of time. Greg Bird Spring Scare is here.
The Yankees sent the first baseman who fought for the starting point to X-rays Thursday one day after he was hit in the right elbow by a Wade Miley pitch. Bird said on Wednesday that he was planning on playing Thursday, but he was scratched from the lineup after the elbow swelled.
The Yankees downplayed the concern, but you never know with Bird who has dealt with significant damage in the past three seasons, a total of just 130 games in Spain – which included 82 games last season where he was not effective.
The injuries and entertainment combined with last year's appearance by Luke Voit brought a first base competition to the Yankees camp. Both have excelled, with Bird slashing .333 / .490 / .641
"It didn't hit [elbow] pad. It never hits the pillow," Bird joked Wednesday.
