If you’re already a member of the Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s attempt to create a Netflix game, you know how crazy a deal it is. Together with Project xCloud, it̵
The service has over 100 games, with more being added every month. And it’s not just quantity. There are dozens of great titles, both AAA and indie, that you can immerse yourself in for $ 10 a month (or $ 15 if you get, which also allows you to select games to be played on PC).
If you are new to the service or about to become a member, there are 10 games to play right away.
Doom Eternal is one of Xbox Game Pass’ new games hitting the service on October 1st. It’s a sequel to 2016’s Doom, a reboot of the classic shooter franchise. It involves platforming and killing masses and lots (and lots) of demons. The game was well received at the release in March and got an 8/10 from our sister site GameSpot.
Gears 5 Ultimate
Gears 5 Ultimate is one of the crown jewels of the Xbox Game Pass. Blockbuster in 2019 is one of Xbox One’s biggest first-party games, and the very fact that similar games are on Game Pass speaks volumes about how seriously Microsoft is investing in the service. It is available on both Xbox One and PC.
Age of Empires II Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II is the comfort food for gaming. The final version of this iconic PC game, launched last November on both Xbox One and PC, upscales the game to 4K and adds new promotions, and you can play on both platforms through Game Pass.
Ori and Wisp’s Will
The Will of the Ori and the Wisp is a beautiful game from Moon Studios that is a sequel to 2015’s Ori and the Blind Forest. A heartfelt platform game and adventure game, it’s a bit like a mix between Metroid, Castlevania and Rayman. It received high praise at its release in 2017, with CNET’s sister site GameSpot calling it “a remarkable synthesis of artistic design and beautiful moments.”
Forza Horizon 4
In terms of non-first-person shooters, Forza is without a doubt Microsoft’s largest and best exclusive franchise. Forza Horizon 4 takes place in a world based on the UK and received great acclaim at its 2018 release. It will soon come along with Forza Motorsport 7, where you drive on a track rather than on the open road. The title hits Game Pass on October 8th.
If you’re tired of big personal shooting games, give Dead Space a try. It’s a beautiful, colorful Metroidvania-style action platformer, released in 2018 for critical acclaim. It continues to be a cult favorite and is definitely worth downloading if you haven’t played it yet (and even if you have). It can be played on both Xbox and PC via Game Pass Ultimate.
The outer worlds
Speaking of imaginative games, The Outer Worlds is an RPG from Obsidian, the gang behind Fallout New Vegas, and it’s a winner. It’s set in an alternate universe where Theodore Roosevelt did not regulate large American companies in the early 20th century, which led to them … of course colonizing the galaxy. So essentially it’s Fallout in space. Game Pass Ultimate users can play it on both PC and Xbox.
Untitled Goose Game
One of the best things about Game Pass is that once you become a member, it allows you to try out games that fascinate you but that you may have been too on the fence to buy. For many people, the Untitled Goose Game will be one of those games. Released in 2019, it is a game where you play as a goose that causes as much chaos as possible. A strange, seemingly insignificant premise, but one that led to a very lauded game – and definitely worth a try.
Destiny 2 is a very popular loot shooting game developed by Bungie, the gang that brought you the original Halo. However, this is not new after hitting the Xbox One in 2017. Now is a perfect time to jump in – or back in – to Destiny 2 though with a franchise-changing (according to Bungie) expansion, Beyond Light, starting November.
Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller that was originally released for PC, Mac and Xbox One in 2016 and since ported to iOS and Android among other platforms. It takes you less than five hours to hit, but it’s a memorable story worth experiencing.
Halo: Master Chief Collection
The Master Chief Collection is a remastered package that includes Halo 1, 2 and 3, ODST, Rach and Halo 4. Yes, it’s very Halo. The game was criticized upon release for bad online multiplayer and technical glitches, but patches have since resolved these issues. This is a great way to prepare for Halo: Infinite next year.
Wasteland 3 is an isometric RPG. This description really does not do it justice in any way, as this post-apocalyptic game is filled with an admirable mix of both excitement, peculiarity and charm. It is located in Colorado in the 22nd century and includes both psycho clowns and a cult dedicated to Ronald Reagan. What more do you need?
What’s left of Edith Finch
This is the perfect game for a service like Game Pass. What’s left of Edith Finch is a two-hour title that you finish in a sit through. It’s hard to describe the gameplay in a way that does it justice, so I’m just saying it’s a haunted exploration of the Finch family’s history. Play it.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5
This is good for people who never owned a PlayStation 2. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 contains almost all games in the series: Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 2, Birth By Sleep and visible versions of DS games 358/2 days (do not ask) and mobile games coded. If you give the series a try and go into it, Kingdom Hearts III is also on Game Pass.
