WWE SmackDown results, summary, ratings: Edge humiliates Roman Reigns and Usos

Friday night was the last time WWE SmackDown is being held inside the ThunderDome, with WWE returning to tour with live fans beginning with next week’s SmackDown. Friday’s show focused on the story that has been the highlight of the ThunderDome era: the story of Roman Reigns and The Usos.

Reigns used the show to wait for the inevitable display of money in the bank’s opponent Edge. When the callout happened, Usos was by his side, but that doesn’t mean the night ended on a positive note for the universal champion.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights from all the action from the ThunderDome inside the Yuengling Center in Tampa.

Edge humiliates Roman Reigns and Usos

At the top of the show, Jimmy Uso was looking for Roman Reigns after Reings left Uso to strike at Edge̵

7;s hands last week. Paul Heyman promised that Uso would receive Reigns’ full attention. Reigns was out for the ring shortly after a promo, explaining that Edge’s success in nearly beating him at WrestleMania was a result of being distracted by family drama involving Usos. After Jimmy got to the ring, Jey Uso also returned, saying all three men needed to get on the same page, prompting Reigns to embrace both men.

Edge announced his intention to end the show by going to the ring and calling Reigns and challenging his manhood if he needed help from Usos dealing with it. When he executed the plan, Reigns and Usos were shown on a screen in the back before Reigns stood and asked Usos to stay while he handled things alone. Reigns began his trip to the ring alone, but Usos made the decision to go out and join him for backup. Reigns went into the ring and started fighting with Edge. As Usos entered the ring, Rey and Dominik Mysterio ran in to lay Usos out with chairs. Usos was able to top Reigns from taking a spear, but was taken out of a Mysterio 619 before Edge hit Jey with a spear before ending the show by locking him in a cross section with the bottom post on a steel chair and promised to take Reigns’ title in a week at Money in the Bank when Reigns was forced to watch from the top of the ramp without offering help to his cousins.

It’s hard to ignore the fact that Jimmy Uso was arrested for yet another DUI last week, and WWE apparently chose the story rather than pushing him for the help he seems to need for this recurring problem. By setting it aside and just focusing on the content of the show, this has been a solid build-up to the fight at Money in the Bank and continues the story of the uneven nature of the relationship between Reigns and his cousins. Edge is as expected presented in a strong way and the upcoming match should be an exciting one. Grade: B +

  • Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Baron Corbin via pinfall with a Kinshasa in a Money in the Bank qualifier.
  • Shotzi Blackheart & Tegan Nox def. Tamina & Natalya via pinfall when Blackheart hit Natalya with a senton from the top rope. Blackheart and Nox made a surprising debut to beat the women’s rookies in non-title action.
  • Sonya Deville announced that Carmella will challenge Bianca Belair to the SmackDown title for women next week. The decision was made after Bayley was injured. Instead of switching opponents for money in the bank, Deville said Belair will defend its title as SmackDown returns to live crowds two days before pay-per-view. Liv Morgan got Carmella’s place in the ladder match Money in the Bank.
  • Seth Rollins defeated Cesaro via pinfall with a stamp in a Money in the Bank qualifier. Cesaro was opened during the match and bled profusely from his forehead. Things tipped Rollins’ way at the time before Rollins hit the jackpot to move on to money in the bank.
