WWE SmackDown results, summary, grades: Roman Reigns defends title, delivers emotional prayer to Jey Uso

Roman Reigns’ race as universal champion is already built to feel that it has the potential to be one of the most interesting title races in modern wrestling history. Reigns made his first televised title defense over his current title reign on Friday’s edition of SmackDown and faced former rival Braun Strowman in tonight’s main event.

However, the lasting memories from the show will be yet another star segment between Reigns and his cousin, Jey Uso. After his fight, Reigns asked Uso not to force his hand by going through with their hell in a Cell “I Quit” fight on October 25th. Uso delivered his answer with his fists, feet and a steel chair.

CBS Sports was with you all night, bringing highlights and recaps of all the action from SmackDown. Read on for everything you need to know.

WWE Universal Championship – Roman Reigns (c) def. Braun Strowman via submission with a guillotine choke. Reigns immediately took the fight to Strowman and hit him with an early Superman blow and then a drive-by dropkick. Reigns continued to dominate until Strowman was able to mount a comeback outside the ring, slammed Reigns into the ring post and threw him across the billboard before knocking him over the ring barricade. Strowman had to make another comeback by hitting a dominator and a chokeslam, but Reigns hit a low shot as he kicked out, leaving an opening for a spear for a Reigns near fall. Reigns tried to get another spear out, but Strowman avoided the team. However, Reigns was able to lock in a guillotine choke and use the cargo hold to force Strowman to drain.

After Reign’s victory, Jey hit Uso’s music and he took to the entrance ramp. Reigns looked at Uso and signaled that he should see before hitting Strowman with a spear after the match. Reigns ordered Uso to come to the ring, which Uso undertook before Paul Heyman handed Reigns a steel chair. Reigns pointed to Strowman and said, “That’s how we eat. If I’m not on top, we do not.” Reigns followed up by issuing a stern warning to Uso, saying, “If I can do this to him, imagine what I can do to you.” Reigns was then put in Strowman with the chair before chasing WWE officials and continuing the attack. Uso climbed into the ring when Reigns said, “I love you, I would never do this to you, but you forced my hand.” After Reigns told Uso that he had forced his hand, he asked him to swing the chair and turned his back. Uso threw the chair down and shouted that he would not do it until he hit Reigns and threw him on the canvas with a super kick. Uso was then read on Reigns with the chair before officials stopped the attack so Reigns could strike a Superman blow before leaving the ring in a mixture of frustration and sadness.

It’s no surprise at this point that putting Reigns and Uso in the ring produces a strange kind of magic. True emotion is not a strong point in modern wrestling, but it has been what has made Uso and Reigns a special program. The fight between Reigns and Strowman was fine for a major TV event, and Reigns breaking out a submission to win is a nice wrinkle. But this was only about Uso and Reigns, where Strowman mainly served as a support to the larger story. Grade: B +

What else happened at WWE SmackDown?

  • Lars Sullivan defeated Jeff Hardy via pinfall after a Freak accident. The fight came after a show-opening brawl between almost the entire SmackDown locker room. Sullivan appeared from a Twist of Fate before hitting his finish.

  • The New Day def. Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura and Sheamus via pinfall after hitting The Midnight Hour on Sheamus. This was presented as something of a “goodbye” to the team when they were split in the WWE draft. The match itself was an excellent, fast-paced match with some big spots and a very strong final stretch before New Day got an emotional victory.

  • Seth Rollins was outnumbered by Daniel Bryan, Murphy and Rey & Dominik Mysterio. Rollins interrupted Bryan’s promo, talking about his return to action, leading to a fight before Rollins was chased off. But before he could escape the ring area, Mysterios came into the picture and Bryan left them to their business. Murphy showed up, apparently tonight the odds, but then attacked Rollins. Mysterios still did not buy Murphy’s actions and refused to shake hands at the end of the segment.

  • SmackDown Tag Team Championship – The Street Profits (c) def. Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode via disqualification as Ziggler and Roode continued to double the team following the referee’s warnings. This was clearly a setup for what will be SmackDown’s main tag program in the near future, so there was probably no clear end to the jump.

  • Bayley refused to sign the contract for her hell in a Cell fight with Sasha Banks. After a burning promo from Banks, Bayley pushed the contract across the table and left the ring, saying, “I do not have to sign anything.” Banks called her a mistake and said she would sign the contract somehow.
