These dismal new statistics follow government Tony Evers (D) declares a public health emergency on September 23, as new cases continued to climb. On Tuesday, he confirmed the state was in the midst of a “crisis”.

“We are nine months into this pandemic,” Evers told the press. “It’s not slowing down. It’s picking up speed. We need to put the brakes on this pandemic.”

About 683 patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 infections, an increase of 37 patients from the previous day, according to Wisconsin Hospital Association. This figure also represents a dismal record high as new cases shoot into the air.

In response to the wave, Evers stressed the mandatory face mask scheme and urged people to refrain from going out and attending events where transmission may occur.

“Skip play dates, dinner parties, family gatherings and work conferences or other gatherings with people you don’t live with so far,” Evers said. “I can’t stress this enough. No party, no bar, no gathering is worth it.”

Evers administration adopted one Safer-At-Home order in April, which was turned down by the state Supreme Court in May following the ruling that the governor exceeded his authority in issuing the emergency declaration, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Ryan Westergaard, Chief Medical Officer of the Bureau of Communicable Diseases at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, stressed the growing concern that as cooler weather approaches and winter begins, respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 will spread faster.

“We are setting records now at a point that is the beginning of the respiratory virus season,” Westergaard said. “If we do not do something different, I would say there is a high probability that it will get worse before it gets better.”
