The ink is hardly dry on the iPhone 12 announcement, and the Pixel 5 is not even available in North America yet, but we already hear the rumble about the next Samsung Galaxy S21 series coming faster in the new year than ever before.
Samsung has had an interesting year; it announced and released the triple-play Galaxy S20 lineup just as the pandemic hit – it was the last personal launch event I attended – and although the reception was overwhelmingly positive, sales figures have been anything but. With the cheapest Galaxy S20 launching at $ 1,000 and the colossal S20 Ultra demanding just as gigantic $ 1,400, phone prices were out of step with a buyer more interested in storing toilet paper than writing off a new pocket computer.
Prime Day may be over, but these 25 deals are still available now!
But it soldiered on, filling its lineup with a host of similar smartphones that ranged in price from $ 100 all the way to $ 2,000. If you want a Samsung phone, the company will meet you where your budget is.

Perhaps the most curious announcement came just a few weeks ago, when Samsung hosted a virtual event for a $ 700 phone that for some forgave the prices from earlier in the year, and for others represented a self-cannibalizing shift in strategy that served to confuse more than the demand for ointment for its flagships. The Galaxy S20 FE is one of the best Android phones of the year, mainly because it retains what makes the S20 lineup so good, while reducing costs to a tasty number.
But the S20 FE is also likely to have the dubious legacy of being the last phone Samsung releases before unveiling the next round of Galaxy S flagships, currently called the S21 (or Galaxy S30, depending on what cooler you talk to) . We’ve now seen renderings of the S21 and S21 Ultra, and both appear to be iterative updates for this year’s phones.
The S21 has a flat screen and the S21 Ultra a huge camera bump, and the main visual update over the S20 appears to be a camera module wrapped around the frame. Whether there is additional function to this form remains to be seen.
We hear the Galaxy S21 series will be a rather minor update compared to the S20, but lower prices and an earlier release date may be exactly what the market wants.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these latest Galaxy S21 leaks is not the phones themselves, but the alleged release date: mid-January 2021, a full six weeks before Samsung usually unveils its Galaxy S flagships.
Now, there are many reasons why the company chooses to go this route, but I have thought about it and here is what I have come up with so far.
While mid-January is usually a black hole with product release – after CES, where many products are advertised but few are actually released – it is right after the holidays, making it a fairly open schedule for any company looking to spray on the market . If the announcement comes in mid-January for a release from the end of January, as we have heard it will, it would leave the field open for the company to market towards a recently released competitor and its main rival, the iPhone 12.
Pushing the Galaxy S21 up until January ensures that the new iPhones do not have it to much time to breathe before Samsung swims in again to steal that saying and that able to (although this is a stretch) causes some people to delay their iPhone 12 purchases if they know a new Galaxy S flagship is threatening. More importantly, however, it gives Samsung extra time to cement its lead over the Android competition in an increasingly competitive market.
Part of this lead inevitably comes from the fact that in the last few years, Samsung has been the first Android manufacturer to supply phones with Qualcomm’s best Snapdragon 800 series platform. The chip designer is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 875 at its virtual two-day tech summit in early December, with production at Samsung (and perhaps TSMC) increasing shortly thereafter. If Qualcomm can hit the yield of its new 5nm chip in quantities that Samsung needs for its new flagships, it could give both companies a pretty clear startup as they both try to compete with Apple in their separate ways – Samsung on phone sales and Qualcomm in Snapdragon 875’s comparisons with the new A14 Bionic.
The third and perhaps most important reason to move the launch of the Galaxy S21 series up to January is that it gives Samsung Other things telephone lines space to stand apart all year round. While the company used to focus its efforts on two major unpacked events, one in late February or early March for the Galaxy S and the other in August for the Galaxy Note, its success with the Galaxy Z series could Folding phones necessitate the addition of a third major product launch to its annual cycle. And given that most of 2021 is expected to continue this year’s trend towards virtual events, the cost associated with adding another is lower than it ever has been.
This may be the first flagship designed entirely to a pandemic audience.
Samsung has not been the only company struggling with a slowdown in the smartphone market, which has influenced people’s desire to replace their devices with expensive $ 1,000+ flagships and for many to replace them at all. Launching the Galaxy S21 series at the same price points as it did the S20 would be a bad look for the largest smartphone maker in the world, so coming early in 2021 with a more cost-effective range of phones would ensure their success.

There is no doubt that the company, like any smartphone manufacturer, has worked away to figure out how best to adapt to the times we live in. Samsung already did its existing phone owners a huge favor by promising three years platform and security updates. and has a phone for every budget.
But its Galaxy S series still gets the most attention and most control from the general public. Launch of three phones with lots of power, new features, and lower prices would be exactly the kind of move one would expect from a company that, year after year, is forced to solve difficult structural problems in a very short time.
