“Retail arbitrage” or the practice of buying goods in physical stores and reselling them online for a premium is becoming common in the United States. This practice is becoming increasingly popular on Amazon, especially with the pandemic sending demand for certain items to highlights.
Business Insider recently spoke with the founders of Arbitrage Ops, an exclusive group of nearly 500 arbitrageurs, some members of which have sold more than $ 400,000 dollars in merchandise since May, when the group was founded. According to records from 20 different individual members’ Amazon seller accounts, group sales have ranged from about $ 29,000 to $ 488,000. The group runs on Discord and costs members $ 50 per. Month, a fee that includes a robust course and advice on how to master arbitraging on Amazon.
“I have always wanted to run my own business,” explained a 40-year-old arbitrageur who joined Arbitrage Ops in July. This arbitrageur, who asked that his name be withheld in order to preserve his financial privacy, began reselling for the first time in July as a counterpart to supplement his main income as an insurance guarantee. After just four months, he made the decision to leave his job – and an 18-year career in the industry behind – to pursue his Amazon business full time.
“I looked at this and said, ‘okay, I’ll stay in a stable job that pays me well, [and is] a good company to work for? Or am I trying a new venture and something that honestly excites me? “Said the South American resident.” It’s a kind of bet on myself that I can make this work. “
Starting from scratch
Like many members of Arbitrage Ops, joining the group was the former insurance guarantee’s first exposure to arbitration.

Originally, this member worked at his Amazon store early in the morning and late in the evening, selling mostly fitness equipment, toys, and sports equipment. “That was when it became clear to me that it was fast becoming something that I needed to change and choose one or the other,” said the dealer.
The 40-year-old insurance veteran is not alone in taking this leap. In a recent interview, the founders of Arbitrage Ops said that other members have also decided to quit their daily jobs to focus on expanding their arbitrage companies.
But even for those who see their business as side-by-side, it is important to have the right mindset and drive.
