In a totally shocking move, Disney yesterday went to James Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 . Gunn was fired from his position last year after the poor taste of ten-year social media was included. Fans, filmmakers and actors expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision at that time. Now Gunn is back in the director's chair, but it raises some questions about when Vol. 3 will hit theaters.
After James Gunn was deleted from Disney, it was not so long before Warner Bros. scooped him up to write and manage Suicide Squad restart. It was a great story at the time that one of Marvel's most prominent directors made the leap to DC. Although Gunn is back with Marvel, his Suicide Squad film is still on, and Marvel is willing to wait for Gunn to convert the project to finally move on with Vol. 3 .
The suicide fight is currently expected to begin recording this fall with a release date set for August 2021. This means that Gunn may not be able to start production for Vol. 3 to either late 2021 or early 2022. Marvel's normal production plan usually takes about a year, so it sets Vol. 3 in theaters by 2023 – six years after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 .
Fortunately, there may already be some shortcuts Vol. 3 can take. James Gunn was already finished with the script before he was fired. There is no doubt that some rewrites and tweaks still need to be made, but at least there is a complete draft of the manuscript.
Of course, it all assumes that suicide fight holds its release date and shooting plan. Whether it is pushed backwards or forwards, really affects what Vol. 3 will do and how much focus James Gunn can devote to it.
Marvel currently has no films slated to release in 2023. It has three films slated for 2022, but it is unclear which of its development projects will be linked to the dates. The other films that Marvel has led are Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Black Panther 2 Doctor Strange 2 and the inevitable but unannounced Captain Marvel 2 . A movie like Guardians 3 will probably use the primary May real estate, so we will have to wait and see how Marvel's scheme shakes.
There was a big question mark on Guardians 3 but now it's just a little less since fans can relax by knowing that the franchise is back in James Gunn's hands. We will pay close attention to how all this shakes, so stick to CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated.
