Elon Musk’s Neuralink, one of his many companies and the only one currently focused on mind control (which we are aware of), has released a new blog post and video describing some of the latest updates – including the use of hardware to enable a monkey to play pong with only his brain.

In the video above, Neuralink demonstrates how it used its sensor hardware and brain implant to record a baseline of activity from this macaque (called ̵

6;Pager’) as it played a game on the screen where it had to move a token to different squares using a joystick by hand. Using this baseline data, Neuralink was able to use machine learning to predict where Pager would move the physical controller, and could eventually predict it exactly before the move was actually made. Scientists then removed the paddle completely and eventually did the same thing with Pong and eventually ended up with a place where Pager did not even move his hand in the air on the non-existent paddle and instead controlled the game in the game completely with his mind via Link hardware and embedded neural threads.

The last thing we saw of Neuralink, Musk himself demonstrated Link tech live in August 2020 using pigs to show how it was able to read signals from the brain depending on various stimuli. This new demo with Pager more clearly outlines the direction that technology is heading in terms of human applications, as the same technology that the company shared on its blog could be used to help patients with paralysis manipulate a cursor on a computer to example. It could also be used for other paradigms, including touch control on an iPhone and even typing using a virtual keyboard, according to the company.

Musk tweeted separately that he actually expects the original version of Neuralink’s product to be able to allow someone with paralysis who prevents standard phone interaction modes to use one faster than people who use their thumbs for input. He also added that future iterations of the product would be able to enable communication between Neuralinks in different parts of a patient’s body, transmitting between a brain node and neural pathways in the legs, for example, allowing “paraplegics to walk again . “

These are clearly bold claims, but the company cites a lot of existing research that underpins its existing demonstrations and short-term goals. Musk’s more ambitious claims, like all his projections, should certainly be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. He added that he hopes human trials begin to get underway “hopefully later this year”, for example – which is already two years later than he originally expected them to start.
