Market researchers at the NPD announced this morning that the video game industry generated $ 43.4 billion. Dollars in revenue in the US in 2018, an improvement of 18 percent on the previous year.
"2018 was another record year for the US video game industry, as consumer spending jumped 18 percent to over $ 43 billion," says Mat Piscatella, NPD. "Whether on the move on a mobile device or at home on a PC or console, consumers of all ages and interests found compelling content that looked forward to 2018. Console, PC and mobile platforms all experienced significant growth while developing Portions of the market as subscription and streaming services gave us a glimpse of a future with many opportunities for the industry and players. "
To be clear, this data is only for the United States, and some results are like the best-selling console, differing in particular – quite a bit from the worldwide picture. But here we go.
According to NPD, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling video game console in the United States in 2018, measured by both unit sales and revenue. The switch hit all kinds of records in 2018: It achieved the highest annual unit sales and revenue from a console since the PlayStation 4 in 2015. And its sales in December were the highest, revenue show of a console since the Nintendo Wii in 2009.
As you might have expected, Switch's success was bound to success in games too: Super Smash Bros. saw the best launch month for every console's exclusive title in history, says NPD and Switch titles accounted for 7 of the 20 largest sales games in 2018 overall.
Regarding Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox One, both the year's revenue and revenue growth experienced in 2018. Of course, Sony's console was number two finisher in general, but that's all we know about these devices.
In connection with accessories and game cards, sales were 33 percent annually to $ 4.5 billion, a record. "Gamepad expense gains were the primary driver of the increase," says Piscatella. "The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller was [December] s best-selling dollar sales item." The success of Fortnite also ran accessory sales thanks to game card purchases used for game purchases, headsets, and controllers.
Software sales increased by 7 percent in 2018 to $ 7.1 billion. The best-selling games were Red Dead Redemption 2 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 NBA2K19 Madden NFL 19 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But it is likely that Black Ops 4 really was the best-selling seller, as NPD does not count PC sales of that title for any reason.
NPD says 150 million Americans play video games that make the US video game industry one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the country.
