The U.S. Space Command chose Huntsville, Ala., As the preferred location for its headquarters on Wednesday. Space Command, a division of the Air Force, is temporarily based in Colorado, but it has held virtual site visits to six potential providers to host the country’s newest military branch.
Redstone Arsenal, an army installation in Huntsville, got the nod. Space Command evaluated potential locations based on factors related to mission, infrastructure, community support and cost, an Air Force press release announced.
Redstone Arsenal was favored because it provides a large, skilled workforce, quality schools and superior infrastructure capacity. In addition, the Army installation offered a facility for free until a permanent structure is built.
“The Air Force Department expects to make a final decision on the location of the U.S. Space Command’s headquarters in the spring of 2023 until the results of the required environmental impact assessment await,” the release said.
The command has also looked at Albuquerque, NM, Bellevue, Neb., Cape Canaveral, Fla., Colorado Springs, Colo., And San Antonio, Texas.
