UNITED NATIONS – The UN's mideast envoy says the prospect of peace between Israel and the Palestinians "fades of the day as the ghost of violence and radicalism grows" and "the risk of war continues to awaken."
Nikolay Mladenov also told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that a negotiated two-state solution is dying further away.
In his words, "What is needed is first and foremost the necessary leadership and political will for change. Until it will be found, Palestinians and Israelis will continue to slip into ever more dangerous territory." Mladenov emphasized that leaders must believe that peace is possible through negotiations.
He also said leaders and the international community should be obliged to support Israelis and Palestinians in reaching a peace agreement based on UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.
