U.S. retail spending grew in Slow Trace in August

U.S. retail spending rose 0.6% in August for the fourth straight monthly increase, but at a slower pace as some additional unemployment benefits expired.

The increase reported by the Department of Commerce marks a slower pace than earlier in the summer, as spending rose sharply from steep falls that occurred early in the coronavirus pandemic. July gain was revised lower to a 0.9% increase from a previous reading of a 1.2% increase.
