The group has so far spent $ 15 million in the Colorado election trying to fire Gardner, the former chairman of the Senate GOP’s campaign arm. Colorado and Arizona are considered the Democrats’ easiest pickups; the party must have at least three seats to break down the Republican Senate by 53 seats.
The Senate Leadership Fund, a GOP group run by allies with majority leader Mitch McConnell, still runs ads in the state, as do two Republican super-PACs. A spokesman for the Senate Leadership Fund said the group will continue its advertising during the race.
But the battle for a Senate majority has largely shifted elsewhere to places like Maine, Iowa and North Carolina. The Senate Majority PAC recently launched major new ad purchases in South Carolina, Kansas and Texas in hopes of pooling seats in the deep red zone. Races in those states are far tougher than Colorado for Democrats, with Hickenlooper consistently leading Gardner by a healthy margin.

Despite Hickenlooper’s leadership in the polls and Senate Majority PAC’s expressions of confidence, a spokesman for the Gardner campaign, who was asked to comment on the National Democrats’ decision, had a different interpretation.
“Obviously, Democrats also know John Hickenlooper has no chance of winning,” Gardner spokesman Jerrod Dobkin said.
