Thunder trades Steven Adams to the Pelicans

The Thunder, with Paul George and Russell Westbrook, last year became the first team in NBA history to trade two reigning All-NBA players that summer. Oklahoma City has been in a state of disrepair ever since.

The latest player sold out for election? Steven Adams being traded to the Pelicans.

Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN:

The Pelicans could use more size and toughness with Derrick Favors leaving the Jazz.

But will New Orleans have Adams enough to trade a first round and several second rounds and take his $ 27,528,088 salary?

I doubt it.

Pelicans still can’t just absorb the big (expired) contract without sending pay. So there are several elements to this trade – presumably negative value contracts going to Oklahoma City. Perhaps this deal will be folded into the Jrue Holiday deal with Eric Bledsoe and / or George Hill going to the Thunder (which certainly looks to turn another productive guard into even more choices).

In New Orleans, Adams will be a bad offensive fit with Zion Williamson and clog the paint. But until Williamson improves his incompetent defense, the Pelicans benefit in many matchups from pairing him with a defensive-minded center. And until Williamson is healthy and conditioned enough to play big minutes, New Orleans has ample opportunity to play Adams without Williamson.
