"All white dwarfs crystallize at some point in their development, although more massive white dwarfs go through the process faster," Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay of the University of Warwick's Department of Physics in the UK explained in a statement .
"This means that billions of white dwarfs in our galaxy have already completed the process and are essentially crystal balls in the sky. The sun itself becomes a crystal white dwarf in about 10 billion years."
A team of astronomers led by Tremblay analyzed observations of 15,000 potential white dwarf stars within 300 light years of Earth made by the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite. The previously verified work predicts that such a catalog of white dwarf stars would reveal a figure in the slow process of turning away from what is essentially a liquid state into a solid state.
"Fifty years ago, it was predicted that we should observe an increase in the number of white dwarfs at certain brightnesses and colors due to crystallization, and only now has it been observed," Tremblay explained.
