We are less than two weeks away from This is us Season 5 premieres, and NBC just dropped a new promo trailer to highlight what’s coming next for the Pearson family. The example teased stories that left fans hanging in the fourth season finale, including about Madison (Caitlin Thompson) being Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) fiancé. But the recent trailer hinted at Kevin and Madison’s relationship in This is us premiere may not be what fans previously expected.

IN This is us Season 4’s fall finale revealed Kevin that he had a pregnant fiancée at his 40th birthday. So in the season finale, Madison told Kevin she was pregnant with twins. Meanwhile, a flash-forward to the distant future confirmed that Kevin had two children – a boy and a girl.
Still, creator Dan Fogelman suggested that Madison may not be the pregnant fiancée from the fall finale. However, he noted that the answer would be revealed in This is us Season 5 premiere. “There’s an immediate response to all of this,” Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2020. “But I think there are pretty much many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic history.”
Now, that This is us Season 5 trailer may have given viewers an early answer. In the middle of the campaign, Kevin is seen rubbing Madison’s pregnant belly. They are clearly happy for their growing family. But no rings are seen. Kate also yells at her brother for using the term “fiancé”.
“You’ll have to explain your use of the word fiancé,” Kate says.
So what’s the deal? From Kate’s remarks, it appears that the couple is not engaged, or Madison became Kevin’s fiancé without telling anyone. But no matter what happens, there is a lot to unpack when This is us returns.

That This is us The Season 5 trailer also included clips with current events, such as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. Both Kevin and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) wear masks in two separate shots.
Meanwhile, Randall, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), Tess (Eris Baker), Annie (Faithe Herman) and Deja (Lyric Ross) sit together and watch news coverage of the protests against police brutality following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery . “What we’re dealing with as people is just so tragic,” Randall says off-screen.
When he spoke to People in September 2020, Brown revealed This is us Season 5 will still focus on the Pearsons. However, the new season “cards” will cover current events and they “will not be completely washed off.”
Then in an interview with Dr. Oz from Oct. 1 teased Brown about how Randall’s perspective will be “illuminated” as This is us addresses the Black Lives Matter movement.
“Especially Randall, since he is a black man raised in a white family, he can have a very specific perspective. It needs to be highlighted, ”Brown said. “I hope people will appreciate the care that has gone into trying to reflect the world we live in today on our show.”
Da Dr. Oz said Randall has the ability to “speak in both cultures,” Brown suggested, as the topic may come up on the show.
Sterling, like Randall, has the ability to translate. But sometimes it can be quite tiring to have to explain systemic racism when you are not the person responsible for it, ”Brown said. “So it’s a little bit of a teaser, too.”

There are, of course, several stories to dive into when This is us Season 5 airs on NBC on October 27th. Outside of bats, the trailer reminded fans of Randall and Kevin’s fight in the season 4 finale. So at the end of the teaser, the two brothers reunite in the cabin on the Big Three’s 40th birthday – and it looks tense.
There is also a sense of concern around Rebecca (Mandy Moore). In the promo, the Pearson matriarch says she feels “like magic.” Kate, however, shows concern all over her face. Last season, Rebecca was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, and she decided to do a clinical trial in St. Louis. Louis after a big push from Randall. So in an interview with The Wrap, Fogelman revealed that next season will be “challenging” for Rebecca.
“It will obviously be a challenging chapter for Rebecca to move forward,” Fogelman said in March. “We have planned a big story for Mandy next season today as an older woman, and also all of her previous timelines.”
In the meantime, we find out more about Randall’s past in This is us Season 5. In season 4, the character struggled with his mental health. The story continues into the new season. Speaking to TV Insider, Fogelman confirmed that Beth will support Randall as he continues treatment with Pamela Adlon’s Dr. Leigh. So in the promo trailer, Beth tells her husband, “Hey, I’m not going anywhere.” She later adds, “This pain is not forever. Nothing is forever except us. ”
The example also shows Randall questioning whether he shares a birthday with Kevin and Kate. “I never really know what happened that day,” Randall says as the promo highlights a clip of the young William (Jermel Nakia). But it seems we’ll find out more about the day Randall was born. Still talking to TV Insider, Fogelman shared This is us Premiere of season 5 will “provide a lot of context to the day before [the kids’ birth]. ”
It is clear that a lot is happening when This is us come back. But no matter what happens, just get the tissues ready. We know this is going to be an emotional journey.
