Time is running out to sign up for a $ 1,200 stimulus check for people who have not yet received the federal payment and do not normally file a tax return. The IRS said it will close its registration site on Nov. 21 at 9 p.m. 15 eastern time
College students and low-income adults may be among those who qualify for the money but have not yet received a check, the IRS said. The IRS had sent letters to about 9 million people who might be eligible for a check, reminding them of the deadline to register with the agency’s so-called non-filing tool to qualify for the payment.
The IRS is trying to track down people who previously missed the stimulus payments, which were approved in March byAid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. This law provided up to $ 1
However, because the IRS relied on data provided in tax returns – such as direct deposit information or home addresses where the agency could send checks – millions of adults who do not normally file taxes may have missed the initial allocation of funds.
People who do not file federal income tax are typically senior citizens, low-income households, or college students that their parents do not claim. Because they do not usually file returns, some may have fallen through the cracks.
“The Non-Filters tool is designed for people with incomes that are typically below $ 24,400 for married couples and $ 12,200 for singles that someone else could not claim to be dependent on,” the IRS said Thursday. “This includes couples and individuals experiencing homelessness.”
The tax authorities said that people who are federal beneficiaries, such as people who collect social security benefits but who have already received a stimulus check, can also register on the non-filters website if their children should have received $ 500, but did not .
The IRS said people who use the Non-Filters tool can choose to get their $ 1,200 via direct deposit; otherwise they will receive a check in the mail.
The IRS has warned that receiving a letter from the agency on stimulus payments does not guarantee eligibility. Some people are excluded from the payments, e.g. Immigrants without a green card.
Who should not sign up?
The tax office warned that people who were to file taxes in 2018 or 2019 should not use the Non-Files tool. Earlier this year, the IRS relied on data from consumers’ most recent tax returns as it directed payments to taxpayers.
“For those who have not filed a tax return in 2019 or have not yet processed it, the IRS used the information from the 2018 tax return to calculate the amount and issued a payment,” the agency said Thursday. “The IRS is unable to correct or issue additional payments at this time and will provide additional information to IRS.gov about the action that people may take in the future.”
