The Masked Singer Season 5 Episode 5 Summary as host Nick Cannon returns

SPOILER WARNING: Do not read on if you have not seen season 5, episode 5 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 7 on Fox.

Nick Cannon is back. The “Masked Singer” host, who had so far been absent in season 5 due to testing positive for COVID-19, returned on Wednesday in the most appropriate way: He was the surprising “wild card” contestant disguised in the end episode.

Cannon joined the show as Bulldog and performed “Candy Girl” of the New Edition. Guest host Niecy Nash, who has filled out for Cannon, rated ignorance of who the Bulldog might be. But at the end of the episode, she announced that she, rather than the usual audience, voted to unmask a contestant, drew rank, and decided for herself who to reveal.

Of course, she chose Bulldog, and Cannon revealed that he was back and ready to resume hosting duties.

“I dedicated my whole show to you and you kick me out?” Cannon joked to Nash. “I was trying to go all the way!”

When he agreed to appear on “The Masked Singer” for the first time after hosting the last four seasons, Cannon admitted it was harder than he expected. “I never thought I would be nervous, but my heart was pounding so fast,” he said.

Panelists Nicole Scherzinger, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke were not given the chance to give their final guess due to the unusual nature of this cover. But after his performance, the names included those brought up by Andy Samberg, Chris Tucker, Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock.

Thicke noted that Cannon managed to hide his voice by singing “Candy Girl” in the song’s falsetto. The panel may also have been thrown off by the clue “And .. Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night Live,” as Cannon as the Bulldog explained, “My dog house is in NY. I’m just a comedy lover who loves to get in. live. ”

Cannon’s voice over hint as Bulldog was not of much help, however: “” All my life I had to fend for myself. To address any challenge that comes my way. I made moves on each green field with panthers and pitbulls. Runs fast like a human torch. Yes, I’m a hot dog. Technically the sexiest dog alive, humans. But do not be fooled by all the animals, I am a big soft inside. I will sit, stay, give you my paw, whatever it takes to make you love me. So watch out for dog kisses. Now this puppy is about to blow the last two wildcards out of the water. And become the most popular pet on stage. And I dedicate my performance to a very special one [Nash]. ”

It was not the only unusual moment in this week’s episode that Nash hyped up as “more chaos than this stage has ever seen”.

“It’s hot, it’s hot, I can not breathe,” said the crab as he was driven behind the stage. “It’s hot in that thing!”

Cannon was the latest “wildcard” contestant, a new wrinkle this season in the battle for the golden mask trophy. Season 5 celebrity contestants are divided into two groups of five (A and B). In addition, the show has added a new character, a rooster named “Cluedle-Doo”, who promises to add some evil to the procedure and share additional clues to the viewers.

This season’s costumes include raccoon, seashell, black swan, snail, grandfather monster, phoenix, chameleon, russian doll (s), porcupine, piglet and wildcards orca and crab. Cannon as the Bulldog joins former unmasked celebrities Logan Paul (Grandpa Monster), Danny Trejo (as Raccoon), Caitlyn Jenner (as Phoenix) and Kermit the Frog (as Snail).

Season 5 contestants boast 26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Oscar nominations, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals and two world records.

The show’s panelists also compete once for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impression of each masked performer (which McCarthy won last time). Jeong and McCarthy Wahlberg each had their point so far on their way into this episode. This week, the guesses about “first impressions” were not counted or revealed.

Here were the other contestants and their appearances in episode five, “Group B Finals – Ulti-‘Mutt ‘Wildcard”:

She made me sit in the kitchen while she cooked food every night. At first I hated it. Then I realized that she was not just trying to teach me how to cook, she was teaching me the value of family and hard work. What started as a punishment became a passion.
