Tesla remembers 9,500 Model X and Model Y cars over roof, bolt problems

Tesla remembers more than 9,500 of its Model X and Model Y electric vehicles over potentially defective roofing and bolts that could be tightened insufficiently.

The company’s stock traded about 1% lower on Wednesday.

36 Model X cars produced between September 17, 2015 and July 31, 2016, according to a filing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency said the cosmetic roofing on the front and spine may have been used without the necessary primer and the pieces may separate over time.

Tesla also reminded 401 2020 Model Y vehicles of a potential problem with its bolts. In the United States, Tesla has produced Model Y vehicles in a tent at the Fremont plant in a most manual process.

The recall was first reported by Reuters.

NHTSA said the bolts connecting the front upper control arm and the steering joint may not have been tightened properly, which could allow the upper control arm to come loose from the steering bone.

“A detached upper control arm can cause the wheels to lean in or out, reducing the driver’s ability to steer and increasing the risk of a collision,” the agency said in a filing.

Tesla said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with any recall and will inspect affected vehicles and adjust as needed.

This is the latest report on reliability issues with some Tesla vehicles.

In October, Tesla voluntarily recalled nearly 50,000 Model S and Model X cars in China due to defective suspension. Earlier this month, Tesla extended its warranty to cover defective mainframes in some Model S and Model X computers, leading to touch screen interruptions, among other things.

Consumer Reports said on November 19 in its annual auto reliability survey that it no longer recommends the Tesla Model S due to problems with air suspension, mainframe and touch control. It also panned Model Y’s body hardware and paint problems, eventually giving three out of four Tesla vehicles sub-par reliability ratings, including Model S, Model X and Model Y.
