Literally, just a month ago, the Internet was confusing when the news broke out to Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Masalany had been cast as the big, green lead Disney + She-Hulk‘s series. Masalany’s reach alone was all it took to make the news sound plausible, and given the outlets that delivered the news, it seemed legit. To anyone who believed in the industry, Masalany has something to say.
During a recent interview with Sudbury Star where Masalany discussed being a jury member on the panel that awards the Glenn Gould Prize, and what kind of music she listens to these days (including Sophie and Kendrick), the topic of She-Hulk come up. The actress was quite honest in her claim that she is not ready to play Jennifer Walters, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
“It’s actually not a real thing, and it’s like a press release that has gotten out of hand,” Maslany said. “It’s not – I’ve been associated with these things before, and the press has gotten into it, but it’s actually not a thing, unfortunately.”
Masalany’s statement was rather peculiar in view of that She-Hulk showrunner Jessica Gao seemed to confirm cast back in September, when she quoted, tweeted the original deadline report. Additionally, Mark Ruffalo took to his Twitter page to Masalany welcomes the family. When io9 reached out to Disney this morning to whisper this whole thing, a representative said, “Unless confirmed on Marvel.com, it’s just rumors.”
Of course, deals have many times correctly reported on casting long before Disney officially publishes the news. Occasionally, “sources familiar with the matter” will just have the information incorrect or speak too soon – before the ink might dry. At the same time, however, this may be strange, the Marvel-branded subterfuge rooted in the studio’s infamous secrecy intended to drum up excitement for its projects long before the audience actually sees them.
What’s important to remember here is that until Disney and Marvel come out with an official statement, there is nothing really set in stone, and it’s in everyone’s best not to stress over who plays which character in a series that hasn ‘t even started producing yet. To be fair, the Maslany casting was pretty cool.
We have also reached out to Maslany’s representatives to comment on this whole situation and will report back with everything shining if and when we hear back.
