Taika Waititi hits the high seas as the dreaded pirate Blackbeard in the upcoming HBO Max comedy series “Our Flag Means Death” Variety have learned.
Waititi joins formerly announced league leader Rhys Darby. The couple previously worked together on the HBO series “Flight of the Conchords” and the movie “What We Do in the Shadows.” Darby starred in both projects, with Waititi acting as a writer and director in the HBO series and starring, co-authoring, co-directing and producing the film.
It was previously announced that Waititi would produce and direct the pilot for “Our Flag Means Death” when the show was ordered for series in September 2020. The show is loosely based on the true tales of Stede Bonnet (Darby), a spoiled aristocrat. who gave up his life with the privilege of becoming a pirate.

Waititi won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit,” which he also directed and starred in as Adolf Hitler. The film was also nominated for Best Picture that year. He is also known for directing the MCU movie “Thor: Ragnarok” and is currently working on the sequel “Thor: Love and Thunder.” He previously directed the season 1 finale of “The Mandalorian”, where he received an Emmy nomination for also expressing the droid IG-11. He was also ready for an Emmy in 2020, when the FX series adaptation of “What We Do in the Shadows” got a nod for the best comedy series.
He is being sent by CAA and Management.
“Our Flag Means Death” comes from author, showrunner and executive producer David Jenkins. Garrett Basch and Dan Halsted also work as executive producers with Waititi.
