A Sri Lankan beauty queen who caused a pageant about the crown has been arrested for the altercation on stage, police said Thursday.
Reigning “Mrs. The world “Caroline Jurie was arrested on charges of” simple wounded and criminal case “in connection with the chaos on Sunday night at a party in Colombo, reported the BBC.
Jurie, who is from Sri Lanka, started the accident when she jumped on the scene when they crowned the new “Mrs. Sri Lanka ”wins Pushpika De Silva, the outlet reported.
She grabbed the crown from De Silva’s head and claimed that she was in fact divorced and thus disqualified from having the title.
“There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and divorced, so I am taking steps to get the crown to second place,”
Jurie put the crown in second place instead and got tears and a fracas on stage.
De Silva had to be hospitalized to be treated for head injuries after the debate, the BBC reported.
She later told reporters she would prosecute for the “unreasonable and insulting” way she was treated, the BBC reported.
Police confirmed Thursday that they arrested Jurie and another competitor in connection with the fights.
“Police have arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra over Sunday’s incident on charges of simple wounded and criminal case,” police spokeswoman Ajith Rohana told the BBC.
Pageant organizers have crowned De Silva and apologized for the incident.
“We are disappointed. It was a disgrace how Caroline Jurie behaved on stage, and Mrs. The World Organization has already launched an investigation into the matter, “the organizers told the outlet.
