Keeping your company's data security can be difficult when your competitors are asking to put all your conversations, projects and hard work right into their palms.
In order to ensure that competitors cannot see behind their tight-fitting curtains, Microsoft has a list of online services that it prohibits its workforce from using, according to a report by GeekWire. They are well-known names for most modern professionals: Slack, Google Docs and Amazon Web Services (among others).
Despite the popularity of some of these services that allow for easy communication between employees and data storage and sharing, Microsoft wants to ensure that everyone stops their own information internally with their own programs. In fact, not all of their own programs are secure, as the Microsoft-owned GitHub is also without limits.
The idea behind this is that these services theoretically would allow companies like Google and Amazon to look directly at some of the things Microsoft is working on. There is no way that Microsoft will make it so easy for its competition.
Here is an excerpt that GeekWire provided from Microsoft's internal document for Slack:
Slack Free, Slack Standard, and Slack Plus versions do not provide necessary controls to properly protect Microsoft Intellectual Property (IP). Existing users of these solutions need to transfer chat history and files related to Microsoft Business to Microsoft Teams, offering the same features and integrated Office 365 apps, conversation and meeting functionality. Learn more about the extra features that teams can give your workgroup. The Slack Enterprise Grid version complies with Microsoft's security requirements; However, we encourage the use of Microsoft Teams instead of a competitive software.
It makes sense when you say that. It not only opens up Microsoft to other companies to see, but it is a bit of a bad look when your own employees use a competing service. It's like someone working at Apple did their work on a Windows computer.
Another interesting recording on the prohibited software list is grammatical, a tool that helps correct spelling and grammar. Although it is a good tool to have, it logs all keystroke users into documents and emails.
Just something to keep in mind if you work with sensitive information.
