The Miami Dolphins are having a difficult conversation about this month’s 2021 NFL draft. Every decision you make regarding players to invest in is challenging. There are a lot of dynamics in play for each choice that cause ripple effects in the rest of your list; so no decision has to be made easily.
But the Dolphins have an even more enviable decision to make with overall pick No. 18 at the end of the month: are you drawing a high-value position as a pass rusher and running the risk of missing out on a runback that could boost your running game? Or are you working out the career path to meet the need and hoping for the best by finding someone who can increase your passport rush?
Miami will not have to wait too long for their next scheduled No. 36 overall pick, but there is a reasonable chance that the team̵
But if Miami wants to work out a setback, it may be the best cards for Miami to explore a downturn. The Dolphins’ roster is well underway and while the team is unlikely to accommodate an additional 12+ player rookie class this season, Miami currently lacks a lot of day 3 picks. The Dolphins, who own four top-50 picks and five in the top-100, have only three picks the rest of the way: one in the 5th round and two in the 7th round. A drop from 18 would be an excellent opportunity for the dolphins to make further choices to get more swings of the bat in this year’s drag class.
And best of all, if you trade don from 18 and still manage to make sure you land your recurring option, the Dolphins will probably have refined their draft positioning twice in the 1st round – given that the Dolphins presumably traded back in the draft. order after trade out of the overall No. 3 choice to ensure that they would be able to produce the same player that they nevertheless coveted as No. 3.
Securing the same players that you draw on No. 3 and No. 18 in general, but getting both in later slots while adding more selections, is quite a bit of a way to open an NFL draft. We’ll see if Chris Grier and the dolphins have an appetite for such an approach here in the coming weeks.
