Ship suspected of spying for Iran is attacked in the Red Sea

An Iranian ship believed to be being used by Iran’s elite military force was attacked near Saudi Yemeni waters on Tuesday, both U.S. and Iranian officials said in an apparent escalation of a conflict between Iran and its regional enemies.

The attack from Saviz, believed by U.S. officials and others in the region to be used to gather intelligence by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Corps, was attacked Tuesday in the Red Sea, officials said. The attack came when international negotiations to revive a nuclear deal between Iran and the United States started in Vienna.

The attack came after revelations last month, reported by The Wall Street Journal, that Israel has targeted ships carrying fuel and weapons from Iran to Syria for the past 1

8 months. According to the Journal report, at least a dozen ships have been targeted.

It was not yet clear who attacked Saviz. Israeli officials declined to comment.

“We are aware of media coverage of an incident involving Saviz in the Red Sea,” said a Pentagon spokeswoman. “We can confirm that no US forces were involved in the incident. We have no further information to provide. ”
