Seth Meyers has not heard of his love for Rihanna. When the "Late Night" host told Jimmy Fallon in February, he is in love with the pop star's slash business mogul (he explained that his wife is fine with it because "she's also in love with Rihanna – that's what we have in common "). And yet he was never able to get Rihanna to come on his show until this week when Meyers revealed he had spent Wednesday shooting back tequila with her to his "Day Drinking" segment where the host is ridiculously drunk with a celebrity's guest instead of sitting through a traditional interview. (Former guests have included Kelly Clarkson, Ina Garten and Meyers' whole family.) "Day drinking with Rihanna," in all its messy glory, was sent on Thursday's show instead of a monologue. Within a few hours of shooting, Meyers and Rihanna dropped theme drinks (including "Bitch Better Have My Bunny", ie a hollow chocolate bunny full of tequila), practiced pickup lines, tried his Fenty Beauty makeup line and had a wild, unabashed singalong for her hit song "Work."
Variety spoke to Meyers the day after the segment fell to talk about how it all came together if Rihanna lived up to his heavenly expectations (spoiler: yes), and why "the kids read this" should not [mimictheirdubiousdrinkingstrategies
How are you? I was impressed that you did it to the show yesterday. ]
Yes, I think everyone was.
You wanted Rihanna on the show for a long time, so how did it happen ?!
I give all honesty to Jeremiah Silva, Who is our music booker? Of course, he was also aware of how much I wanted Rihanna to be on the show, so in the last two years he has told me he is making progress and that he thought "Day Drinking" would be a good idea. It struck me as wishful thinking, but looked at it now … it
When was it confirmed that you should do it? Did it get along quickly, or had it been in the works for a while?
I think we knew for about six weeks. She gave us a date, and historically when we made "Dagsdrink" it has been on a day without a show, because it goes without saying that it would be impossible to make a show that evening. So we actually had to go to the network and say, "Hey, we'll show a mid-term rehearsal," which we never do "to make day drinking with Rihanna." And it was a much quick approval from NBC.
I would like to emphasize that this was only the second time we had to cancel a show and the other was the birth of my first son. For the birth of my second son, I went to work the next day. So the order goes my first son, Rihanna, my second son.
I want your other son to understand.
Yes, he will. When I have introduced him to his work, I think he will applaud the decision.
Have I wanted her as a guest so long, how was it to not just meet her, but do something as intense as this bonding experience?
I had told her a couple of times when she got through on "SNL" but had never been near the kind of interaction I had within five minutes a day when I spoke to her more than I have ever had in my life. Things about her that didn't just hit me, but beat every single person there, she was immediately kind and relative, and it became clear that she was down to the idea and what it meant. You can plan what you think you want to do with "Day Drinking", but you understand that the best moments will be what happens in between and what kind of drink this person is. We didn't intend for her to be chugging beer, but when she did, I thought it was a signal to everyone involved, and everyone saw that we should take full speed.
I'm so stuck on tequila shooters in the chocolate rabbit. I don't know who came up with it, but I welcome them and worry about them.
During the weeks, the authors on this piece – Amber Ruffin, Jenny Hagel, Seth Weiss, Ben Warheit and Mike Karnell director – just came up with ideas and [themed drinks] is something we've always done as Kelly Clarkson. It's really just a way to start drinking. The thing about "Bitch Better Have My Bunny" is that I said we should have a knife [to open them] and Mike said no, we score it so it's easy to twist. I do not know which writer came up with the very funny idea, but I am sure which one forgets to score the other rabbit is not that worried.
How many hours was it completely?
Two and a half, three, maybe?
Oh! I thought it would be much longer, and now I am even more concerned about how quickly you drank it all.
I should say that the children read this piece, 1) you should not drink, and 2) if you do, you should not drink like this. But you have to get stuffed right right so it can cut together well. It also likes, you can't say that Rihanna has nothing better to do. Everything she must do is better than drinking with me! So we were just very attentive to her time.
Was there anything you learned about Rihanna, who especially surprised you?
She really is just a lot … I mean, see if she had never been shown I would also have been fine. I've had enough of Rihanna, her is just in the world, I never feel really deserved. The very fact that she appeared and was so games to do so was such a great gift for us. But t he was really nice thing that at the moment between shooting she's the easiest to talk to. It was the fun part.
Of course, I have to say that drinking on camera unfortunately drinks in reality because it's fun, and then you wake up the next morning and are like, "Oh my god, what happened?" Unlike times when you drink with your friends in a bar and call them to see how you embarrassed yourself, it was filmed and had to fly a day later so you can see exactly what you did . So it's a very interesting journey.
Was there something you were sorry to lose, you could wish to have stayed in?
No … I was singing a version of Only Girl in the world, but it was pretty hard to listen to. It turns out that a party of her work is outside my register. To be honest with you, we were looking for other things to cut because it's a long time. We had to drop the monologue for the first time for a while … maybe the first time since the 2016 election?! So it was historic.
I almost expect it was two hours longer. The best moments are those that are just Rihanna like Rihanna, which we could never have planned for or written. I mean, my god, some of his one-liners are better than anything you want to hear on a comedy show!
Her advice to you and your wife [in which Meyers asks Rihanna how he can blow his wife away and Rihanna answers “you said it: blow her away”] has got a lot of pickup.
I really had no idea what she was saying and so what I realized how perfect it was … I mean, it was so perfectly delivered.
You also need to know that she is a beautiful game to get into a "battleship" dig.
Yes! And by the way I did not intend to do the joke until that moment, and it was all about being super full, fully appreciating how much fun she was going to be around, and being pretty sure she would have a great reaction.
So how does this experience experience your other Day Drinking segments?
Now I will first give credit where it is due to Retta. I was originally supposed to drink with my family, and Retta was the guest who came out and said, "I want to do it with Seth." We never thought it would be me to drink with guests. Then she started it. They have all been really different, but very funny. To say yes to this as an idea, you are already the right kind of person for it.
The thing that I want everyone to know is that Rihanna was just as much fun every minute as the camera did not roll. There is no on / off switch for her charm or charisma.
Do you have another dream "Daydreaming" guest?
I think I just want to bask in this a little longer, do you know? I don't want Rih to think I'm just moving it fast.
