Sean McVay is a rising star in NFL coaching circles – that's why all his friends suddenly found head-coaching jobs. But when it was time for the Super Bowl 53, Ram's head coach was thoroughly covered by Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
McVay admitted so much after the game, but Belichick had to know that the game was won before the kickoff.
NFL Films released more mic-up recordings from Sunday's Super Bowl and we were treated to pregame chat between Belichick and McVay. The contrast between the two main buses was striking.
While Belichick was locked in for the whole interaction, an almost intimidated McVay could not stop nervous about compliments to Patriot's head coach. These pregame conversations between coaches are almost always cordial, but McVay took it to another level.
This was the exchange:
McVay: So much respect for you.
Belichick: Likewise, you have done a good job. OK.
McVay: So great ̵
Belichick: (Expletive) you take over, buddy.
McVay: No, no hi – the way you can move your identity and really still It's incredible to find out what I mean, week and week. It's incredible.
McVay: Really so great respect for you and the way you do it, man. You are right in coaching.
McVay: Explain to yourself, coach.
Of course, McVay only showed respect for a full-time match. But he must remember that Belichick is Belichick. The man can sense nervousness, and McVay undoubtedly dropped his hand by throwing over the much coach he was trying to defeat.
The rams didn't get a chance.
