A new report on Thursday found that Brazilian Amazon released approx. 20 percent more carbon dioxide than the absorbed.
According to the magazine Natural climate change, the Brazilian Amazon released 16.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide and absorbed only 13.9 billion tons from 2010 to 2019.

“We were half expecting it, but this is the first time we have figures showing that the Brazilian Amazon has turned around and is now a grid,”
Also cited in the study were cases of deforestation, both from fires and cuttings, which increased four times in 2019 compared to the previous two years.
“Brazil experienced a sharp decline in the application of environmental protection policies after the change of government in 2019,” said INRA in a statement. The change coincides with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro taking office.
Combating climate change would become increasingly difficult if the Amazon became a major source of carbon dioxide, experts say.
“We do not know at what point the transition may become irreversible,” said Wigneron.
