School's rule for girls to wear skirts breaks the law

A charter school in North Carolina has been commissioned by a federal judge to stop the enforcement of its rule, which forced female students to wear skirts.

According to the Associated Press, Charter Day School, based in Leland, N.C., was commissioned by US District Judge Malcolm Howard last week to abandon the traditional dress code rule that could punish suspected or even expulsion offenses.

The school was sued in 2016 over the rule of lawyers from three female participants who claimed that girls had to behave differently from boys because of the skirts and forced them to avoid activities such as sports in fear of "postponing their underwear and being reprimanded by teachers or teased by boys, "according to Howard's summary of the applicants' arguments. The female students were also probably distracted from studying because they would be forced to pay attention to "positioning their legs during class."

Howard concluded the rule of violation of constitutional protection for equal treatment and the skirt-only rule treated female students differently than male students.

Charter schools are funded by public funds, but have more autonomy than ordinary public schools.

"All I wanted was for my daughter and any other girl in the school to have the opportunity to wear pants so she could live outside, sit comfortably and get warm in the winter" Bonnie Peltier, mother of a student in the case , said through the ACLU. "We are happy with the court, but it is disappointing that it took a court order to force the school to accept the simple fact that girls in 201

9 should have the opportunity to wear pants."

No student was subjected to such violations at school, which opened in 2000.
