Is this … the right place? Variety reports today that the SAG Awards will air an hour-long pre-designed show this year as opposed to the awkward remote program that other award shows have done during the pandemic. Perhaps in response to the weekend’s Golden Globes, which were filled with mishaps, technical challenges and general spookiness, the SAG Awards will instead keep the celebrations to a minimum to maximize COVID-19 safety. The thesis, which airs April 4 on TNT and TBS, and will feature the signature SAG “I’m an Actor” speech and comic elements in between 13 award-winning ads and the “In Memoriam” section, all shaped. “We are looking at trying to make a unique award ceremony in one hour and let people say, which they very rarely do. [with an awards show], ‘Man, I wish we had more,’ ‘said producer Todd Milliner Variety. The nominees will still be placed in awkward breakout rooms to announce the winners, but since it’s all shaped, they know the results days before the rest of the world will (but maybe we’ll still get the weird Zoom interactions before the show cuts to commercials ). Overall: net positive?
