The council in upstate New York approved an independent investigation into the city’s handling of Daniel Prude’s arrest and death. The law approves a maximum of $ 100,000 in financing for the firm, according to the bill. The bill went from eight to zero.
Lawyers for Prude’s family recently released a police body video showing officers covering his head with a “saliva sock” and holding him in the ground in an inclined position before stopping breathing. Prude was pronounced brain dead at a hospital where he died on March 30.
According to the city council, the company conducting the investigation is investigating internal communications and procedures related to Prude̵
The new legislation also includes a repeal of funding and approval for a new police station and neighborhood center that was passed seven to one.
The legislation approving the project was passed on August 18, and the city has not yet issued bonds or signed contacts related to the project, according to a press release.
City councilors discussed that while they were already underway, they plan to look at another use of the land.
The council also enacted legislation for the transfer of family and victim services and its funding to the Department of Recreation and Youth Services, which was previously under the Rochester Police Department. The bill went from eight to zero.
Warren previously expressed support for the transfer of family and victim services and the independent investigation.
