Returnal gets its first major patch tomorrow, May 5th. But before that happens, developer Housemarque warns gamers to disable auto-update, one of the PS5’s convenience features, so they do not lose progress. The patch is scheduled to go live at. 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET.
The studio issued the warning in a tweet asking players to turn off the feature and link to a Sony support page for the guide. It makes sense. If your PS5 is in suspension mode when the update goes live, it will automatically end the game to apply the patch. If you were in the middle of the race when it happened, this progress will be lost.
To disable automatic updates, go to Settings> Saved data and game / app settings> Automatic updates. There you can switch automatic download and automatic installation when the console is in sleep mode.
Sleep mode is a way for Returnal players to take a break from a race, as the game does not allow intermediate runs. This has led some fans to request the studio patch in a save feature, though some have claimed it is at odds with the game. Either way, losing progress seriously can lose you, and the game is pretty long anyway.
