Resident Evil Village producer Tsuyoshi Kanda has said he does not want players to be in constant fear when playing the upcoming horror game.
In an interview with Axios Gaming included in the latest newsletter, Kanda said Village’s development team did not want to intimidate players after some feedback suggested the game’s predecessor was too intimidating.
“When we develop a new Resident Evil game, our goal is not always to make it more scary than the previous title, but to find a balance to deliver a scary but fun experience for the players,” he said.
“Some of the feedback we received regarding [RE7 was] that it was too scary to play, ”Kanda added. “In one respect, it̵
“But at the same time, it is always our goal to create something that everyone can feel comfortable with jumping in and playing, so we let go of the tension curve. [in RE Village] compared to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, so players are not in constant fear. ”
While Resident Evil 7 placed players in a series of confined spaces, “as if the walls of the Baker Palace closed in on them,” Resident Evil Village’s relatively open environments aim to create excitement differently.
“For Resident Evil Village, we took a completely different approach with the village’s openness and players not knowing what could lurk beyond the trees,” Kanda said.
“Something that we must also always be aware of is the voltage curve. We also find that people become immune to fear if they consistently face a tense situation or environment.
“These moments of comfort act as a buffer to ensure that people are not completely insensitive to the fear. The hidden spaces that you often see in many ‘Resident Evil’ games are a great example of where players can take a deep breath and know they are safe. ”
Resident Evil Village is the 10th main game in the Resident Evil series and the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It will be released on May 7 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.
A 60-minute playable demo was released on Sunday, allowing players to explore the village and castle area for a total of 30 minutes each.
Capcom released a former PS5-exclusive Resident Evil Village demo in January, in which players took over the role of a character called Virgo as she tries to escape from Dimitrescu Castle.
