Report: The front office was split on bringing back Jeurys Familia

Jeurys Familia's return to the New York Mets has been less than ideal.

A year ago in July of 2018, the Mets shipped Familia out to the Bay Area's Oakland Athletics at the trade deadline. At the time, the righty had a 2.88 ERA.

After that season, Familia came back to New York this offseason, however, a report indicates that there were mixed feelings in the team's front office in regard to making the move. By Yahoo! Sports, the decision to re-sign Familia was a choice that was not "universally supported" within the front office.

Signing Familia was a quick decision made by general manager Brodie Van Wagenen early in his tenure this past December, as the move was his first major league signing. Thus in 201

9, the 29-year-old thrower has a 7.50 ERA and has contributed four blows to a disastrous season for the team's bullpen, which leads the majors with 22.

Two weeks prior to re-signing Familia, the Mets landed Edwin Diaz via trade. Diaz allowed the Mets to move Familia into the eighth inning setup role this season. Familia, Diaz has struggled as well in 2019, as is currently producing a career-worst 5.50 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched with 19 saves.

Familia first joined the Mets in 2007 as a non-drafted free agent and spent the first seven years of his career with the team. He led the MLB in saves in 2016 with 51.
