Jenrry Mejia, released by Mets in November, signed a minor league agreement with the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Mejia has been suspended three times for drug use, including a lifetime ban from MLB in 2016, but Commissioner Rob Manfred decided in July that he could qualify to pitch in the majors next year despite serving several suspensions for the use of Forbidden steroids.
The 29-year-old last sat down to Mets in 2015. His best season in Queens came in 2014 when Mejia appeared in 63 games and had 28 saves. He signed a one-year deal with Mets before last season and pitched for their Dominican Summer League team.
The Red Sox needs theft assistance with the loss of Joe Kelly to Dodgers and closer to Craig Kimbrel still a free agent.
