In the very first place Ratchet & Clank games, players are able to grab RYNO, which stands for “Rip You a New One” – you have to understand, it was the early 2000s. RYNO is the ultimate weapon and costs an exorbitant amount of bolts, the game’s currency, to acquire. As the series continued, developer Insomniac Games added new RYNOs with new effects.
The RYNOs from previous games have always been great cannons that pack a serious blow, but the RYNO 8 in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is something completely different.
[[[[Spoiler alert: This post includes spoilers for RYNO 8, Rift apart̵
Players cannot pick up RYNO 8 until late in the game’s history and get it for free after collecting all Spybot collectibles scattered around the world.
RYNO 8 summons objects from other dimensions, melts them into the ground and creates a purple shock wave that destroys everything nearby. Some of these objects are from Rift apartworld, like a large dinosaur or a spaceship. But other objects come from different dimensions – dimensions that Sony fans may be familiar with.
When you summon an object, it launches into the air and crashes to the ground. Most objects explode on impact, but Easter eggs tend to linger for a moment. Some items last only a second and can be very difficult to see.
After upgrading our RYNO 8 a bit, we spent about 45 minutes shooting the portal into the ground. There are small things and big things, depending on what arena you are in. Here is the list of references we found with RYNO 8.
Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Ratchet & Clank’s 2016 remake is more of a retelling of the original game than anything else, built to bond with the duo’s films. The Blargian Snagglebeast – a classic boss from the original Ratchet & Clank – appears updated in the 2016 version. And RYNO 8 can summon the shiny, new Blargian Snagglebeast to crush your enemies.
Horizon Zero Dawn
There are two creatures from Horizon Zero Dawn that can jump out of RYNO 8.
Above you can see Ravager, a smaller fighting machine with cat-like claws.
Thunderjaw is a much larger fighting machine from Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s the series’ T-Rex equivalent.
Jak and Daxter
RYNO 8 can summon Jak from Jak and Daxter (albeit the adult version from Like 2 and Like 3). He plunges into the ground and stands around a bit before returning to his dimension. Daxter, Jak’s orange loud companion, does not look.
Sucker Punch’s Sly Cooper series gets quite a few RYNO 8 Easter eggs. The first is Sly himself, who jumps out of the portal and hangs a bit before leaving.
The other is the Sly Cooper van, where the brains of Sly’s theft operations (Bentley) and the muscle (Murray) hang out.
Finally, there is an object that appears to be a statue of Bentley that falls from the sky and disappears almost immediately.
Sunset Overdrive gets two Easter egg appearances in Rift apart. The first is the drink’s mascot, Fizzie, who falls out of the portal for a few seconds. It waves a little and then disappears.
The second Easter egg is a barrel of OverCharge Delirium XT that falls out of the sky and disappears in a moment when you blink and you will miss it.
Song of the Deep
Song of the Deep, Insomniac’s submarine game Metroidvania, only gets one Easter egg. The player-controlled submarine can fall out of the sky and implant itself in the ground before exploding.
We’m not quite sure these two Easter eggs are actually from Uncharted, but they are probably related to Nathan Drake and his treasure hunt. Above you can see a tanned Jeep that looks like the one Nate, Sully and Sam ride around in Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
There is also a propeller plane that can fall out of the RYNO 8 splits. We think it’s probably a tribute to Victor Sullivan’s propeller plane, Hog Wild, from the unknown games.
These are the references we could pick up after some time spent shooting on the ground. We are without a doubt dedicated fans will see even more Easter eggs the longer Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is out in nature.
