If you voted for "The Rachel Maddow Show" Friday night, your eyes have not deceived you. The Knoxville skyline was actually on the screen behind Maddow, who reported on the Mueller report during which MSNBC host Chris Hayes called her an "eventful" day.

"I'll tell you what Chris refers to a few hours ago – maybe even less than that – I was kneeling in a trout stream in Tennessee," Maddow said. "But now it's Mueller's time, and then I'm in a studio in the great state of Tennessee."

Maddow hosted the show of a study at the University of Tennessee's campus in Knoxville after leaving his fishing excursion when the news broke Robert Mueller's report on the Trump-Russia study submitted to Justice Minister William P. Barr.

"The eagle is pretty much as safe as they were when I turned away from them inexorably this afternoon," she said. "But now it is – listen – this is history. This is a reason to stop fishing and go to work."

Social media users were quick to download on the Knoxville background, and others reported spotting the host around the city. A fan could even speak a picture with Maddow, which she described as "peanut."

How and why UT was chosen

Karen Dunlap, a public relations specialist for UT's communications and marketing office, said in an email that NBC contacted the school's video production director to hire the studio.

"Maddow was in the area on vacation, and our studio is conveniently located and has uplink options," Dunlap says. "The production study was used by our video production team and journalism students at College of Communication and Information."

The program has also hosted Fox News, Fox Business News, CNN, ESPN, CBS Sports Network, NBC News and Today's Show , Dunlap said.

It is unclear how exactly Maddow's outing took place and whose fishing was the main focus of her trip. Rep. Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville, said on Twitter that Maddow was in town for big ears.

Pi Recordings, a jazz record company representing several Big Ears artists, entertained the idea on Twitter. According to the tweet, Maddow was on their flight.

"This festival is bigger news than we thought" read the tweet. "Or … she just flies to Knoxville. I prefer to think she's going to the show."

Whatever her reason for the visit, Maddow said it had to stop for such monumental news.

"Tonight is a landmark," she said. "I would still be fishing, otherwise. But we still have no idea what Robert Mueller has found."
