Rabies alert issued in parts of Pasco County after cat tests positive for virus



NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – A rabies alarm has been issued in Pasco County after a cat tested positive for the virus.

Florida Department of Health in Pasco County said 60-day rabies alert affects residents of the following borders:

  • West of Madison Road
  • South of Trouble Creek Road
  • East of the United States 19 Hwy
  • North of Sunray Road

Residents and visitors are encouraged to take the following precautions:

  • Keep rabies vaccinations updated for all pets.
  • Keep your pets under direct supervision so that they do not come into contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, immediately seek veterinary care for the animal.
  • Do not handle, feed or accidentally attract wild animals with open trash cans or litter or by letting animal feed outside.
  • Never assume wild animals or bring them into your home.
  • Teach children never to handle unknown animals, wild or domestic, even if they seem friendly.
  • Prevent bats from entering homes or inhabited rooms in homes, churches, schools, and other similar areas where they can come into contact with humans and pets.
  • If you are bitten by animal testing, you should immediately. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water. Go straight to your family doctor or hospital.
