Pundit Alan Smith has predicted a difficult transfer window to Manchester United after naming the players and positions Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should target this summer.
A major rebuilding is expected at Old Trafford, where the summer window now opens for business and more players are expected to both arrive and depart as United eye a return to Europe's elite.
Former Arsenal striker Smith has highlighted defensive midfield as a priority for United and is called West Ham's Declan Rice as a smart transfer target – sensing the idea of selling stars like Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.
He told Sky Sports: "Can they get some players from the book? Can they sell Pogba for big money to spend more money on the transfer market? They sell Sanchez? It could be difficult because of his pay, which is a problem.
"And finally, Solskjaer is the right person to attract big players? I think the manager plays a major role in recruiting. United is still a very attractive club to participate and they pay huge salaries, but they are not in the Champions League, so making it more difficult.
"It will be very difficult for them because there are many players in the club who are not good enough. They must turn around the squad that is so difficult. Then you have the whole sports director or the director of the football problem." [1
"The defense must work," he added. "They admitted too many goals this season."
"As a manager you will know what your best defense is, and I don't think anyone has really played well enough to nail down a place even though Victor Lindelof has shown some good shape. You have people like Chris Smalling and Phil Jones who has been there forever; are the kind of players who will win you the league?
"There is a big reconstruction work to make defensive. defenders will be very coveted and United will not be the head of the queue because they are not in the Champions League.
"Gareth Bale would be an attractive signature. If he attended, you would think Anthony Martial had to go and maybe (Romelu) Lukaku also leave? Bale would cost a lot of money and would thrill the fans. He can't come into the Real Madrid team, but he would definitely improve United's attack.
"United has been associated with Declan Rice and they should be on the market for a defensive midfielder. Nemanja Matic has seen his best days. 19659002] "United will have to be pretty sharp this summer."
