Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, says an investigation is underway to investigate “potential members of Congress” who held trips to pro-Trump rebels before last week’s uprising in the U.S. capital.
“All of this is reviewed, both the people on campus who were here, and the behavior before and after, a lot of videos floating around out there,” Ryan NPR told Michel Martin during NPR’s special coverage of the vote in the House.
“It will all be considered, including anyone who may have been on the inside, including members of Congress.”
Ryan, who chairs the subcommittee on appropriations that fund the Capitol police and the weapons office, also told reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning that these alleged trips consisted of “handfuls” of people.
“You know enough to be a group,” he said. “It was not a one-on-one or a small family.”
Rep. Mikie Sherrill, DN.J., claimed during a Facebook Live broadcast Tuesday night that some Republicans in Congress had given groups a “reconnaissance” tour of the Capitol prior to the uprising.
Sherrill’s allegations came the same evening as rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., addressed voters on an Instagram Live video expressing her fears that some of her Republican colleagues would have revealed her location during the January 6 uprising.
“Even I did not even feel confident getting to that point of extraction because there were QAnon and white supremacist sympathizers and frankly white supremacist members of Congress in the point of extraction that I know and that I felt would reveal my position. and allow me that, that would create opportunities to let me get hurt, kidnapped, etc., “she said.
Neither Ryan nor Sherrill has released any names or provided evidence with reference to an ongoing investigation.
Ryan also told NPR’s Martin that it is “shameful, slippery and irresponsible” that some members of Congress have refused to go through the newly installed metal detector in the house.
“Seeing members of Congress walk around and push themselves into the chamber without having to go through the magnetometer, you know, because they can, I think is a sign of how disgusting things have become for some of these people who support Donald Trump. , “he said.
“The rules don’t apply to them, whether or not it means wearing a mask, as we saw in the video when we were all trapped in a hearing room last week.”
Many Democrats have criticized Republican lawmakers for refusing to wear masks as they line up with colleagues during the Capitol lockdown. At least three Democratic congressmen have since tested positive for coronavirus.
