GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – An armed man killed two people at a Wisconsin casino restaurant and seriously injured a third before being killed by police, authorities said.
Brown County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Kevin Pawlak said the shooting at Oneida Casino in Green Bay on Saturday night appeared to be a targeted attack.
“He was targeting a particular victim who was not there, but he still decided to shoot some of the victim’s friends or colleagues, it appears,” Pawlak told a news conference early Sunday.
Authorities have not released the identities of the shooter or his victims.
Pawlak was not sure if Sagittarius was a former employee of the restaurant, but said “it appears there is something to do with employment.”
“Whether they all worked there or not, we are still working on it,” he said.
The injured person was treated at a Milwaukee hospital, Pawlak said.
The attack happened around noon. 19.30 at the casino operated by Oneida Nation, whose reservation is located on the west side of Green Bay.
Jawad Yatim, a witness, said he saw at least two people being shot.
“I definitely know two, because it happened right next to us, literally right next to us,” Yatim said. “But he shot pretty aggressively into the building, so I would have no doubt he hit other people.”
Yatim said the shooting began in a casino restaurant.
“We got the hell out of there. Thank God we are fine, but of course we wish the best for everyone who has been shot, ”he said.
Attorney General Josh Kaul tweeted shortly before noon. 22 that the scene was “contained. There is no longer a threat to society. ”
Webster said the casino is connected to a large hotel and conference center, Radisson, which is also owned by Oneida Nation.
Gambler Max Westphal said he stood outside after being evacuated from the building for what he thought was a minor problem.
“Suddenly we hear a massive flood of shots – definitely 20 to 30 shots,” Westphal told WBAY-TV. “We started by running towards the motorway … There must have been 50 police cars passing by on the motorway. It was frankly insane. ”
Pawlak said authorities called for a “tactical alert” after receiving the report from an active shooting game. It “brings any agency from all over the area to the casino, to the Radisson,” he said of the large presence of police.
Government Tony Evers issued a statement late Saturday saying he was “devastated” to hear about the shooting.
“Our hearts, thoughts and support go out to the Oneida Nation, Ashwaubenon and Green Bay communities and all those affected by this tragedy.”
Oneida is one of 11 tribes that operate casinos in Wisconsin under agreements with the state called compacts. In essence, the tribes promise a percentage of their gaming revenue to the state in return for the exclusive right to offer casino games. Tribal gaming in Wisconsin generated nearly $ 1.3 billion in gross revenue in the 2018-2019 fiscal year, but suffered deep losses in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
