CHICAGO – Police said that the narrowed type of rope "star" star Jussie Smollet said was located around the neck during an alleged attack.
Police said rope is similar to ropes sold to be used as a line of clothing. Detectives have identified local stores where they are sold and undergo surveillance video from these stores.
At this point, the police have not found anything that certainly shows that Smollett was actually attacked.
The actor told police that two men seemed to know who he was before beating him, shouting racial and homophobic veil and beating a rope around his neck during a morning murder in Chicago, according to a recent police report.
Smollett told the police that two men dressed in black got their attention by mentioning the name of the TV show when he went downtown early on January 29. Smollett said the more aggressive man had a black mask to hide his face.
Smollett, who is black and obviously gay, said men shouted then veil, hit him in the face with their hands and poured an unknown substance on him that stained his clothes. He said the men tied a rope around their necks before they drove away, according to a brief political report published after the public after a media request for freedom.
The report noted that the 36-year-old actor said he initially did not want to report the attack, but another person convinced him to do so. The name of the person who called Smollet to call the police was edited in the report, noting that the person was at Smollet when officers arrived at his Chicago apartment.
When officers arrived at his apartment, Smollett still had a white rope draped around his neck. The report also noted that the officers extinguished their body cameras at Smollett's request, something that victims of crimes sometimes ask officers to do, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
No arrests have been arrested, but police continue to collect and review surveillance video from the area and look for possible witnesses, said Tuesday Guglielmi. He said the police were also going to shops to ask employees if they remember to sell ropes to anyone and to determine if security camera recordings show that someone buys the kind of rope tied lice-like around Smollet's neck.
"We are starting to find stores to see if any of this kind of rope was bought in the area," Guglielmi said.
Smollett went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after being afforded to do so by the officers, according to police report. Police said he was being treated for scrapers and bruises and released.
Smollett took officers to the place where he was attacked and told investigators that he had received hatepost a week earlier. The police have said the FBI investigated the letter sent to the Chicago studio where "Empire" was filmed.
Guglielmi said officers do not yet have video showing the attack and continue to search for two men who were wandering around the time of attack to question them what they might have seen.
Smollett and his family have defended themselves against allegations that are offset on social media that he has been less than cooperative and changed his story. On Saturday, Smollett gave a concert at Troubadour in West Hollywood and told the audience that if he didn't perform his attackers would win.
