Philadelphia police officer shot while stopping traffic on West Somerville Avenue in the city’s Logan section



PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A Philadelphia police officer was shot while hitting a traffic stop Wednesday night in the city’s Logan neighborhood.

It happened on the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue just before noon. 19

According to Sgt. Eric Gripp with the Philadelphia Police Department, an officer was fired at as he approached a vehicle during the traffic stop. A total of five officers were on site to help before the shot broke out.

As one of the officers approached the vehicle, which was occupied by four people, Gripp says a 24-year-old man inside produced a gun and started firing.

All five officers returned and killed the 24-year-old armed suspect. A weapon was picked up on the spot. It is still unknown how many shots were fired by officers.

Gripp says the officer was shot in the foot and currently hospitalized in stable condition. Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and city management are currently with the officer and his family at the hospital.

The three other people in the car, a woman and two men, were not injured. They are currently being questioned by police.

Gripp says it is still unknown at this time was asked to stop traffic.
