The beverage company, founded in New Bern, North Carolina, announced the environmental plan Friday.
As early as 2020, Pepsis Aquafina water will be sold in aluminum cans at restaurants. The company still prepares the details of deployment to retail stores.
Plastic waste is picking up. Experts have said there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. "Tackling plastic waste is one of my top priorities and I take that challenge personally," said PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta in a statement. "We do our part to solve the problem of reducing, reusing and reinventing our packaging."
Pepsi has not made any plans to get rid of soda. But it said it promised to make new plastic bottles with 25% recycled material.
