The great story in Edmonton today was the news that Dave Tippett was officially the 16th coach in franchise history. Tippett was introduced at. 11.00 MT and then went on to make individual media hits with the local TV and radio stations.
While that happened, several news broke from the organization, this departure time. According to Mark Spector of Sportsnet, Oilers and Paul Coffey have agreed to go their separate ways. Coffey was hired in a counseling / competency and development coaching position in the winter of 2018. Having said that, Coffey had been out of the limelight and honestly no one really knew what he was up to. Outside of a few rare gigs in Bakersfield, Coffey just seemed to sit in the background.
Whether this will affect the team, it must be seen. Were the Coffey coaching defenders and helping guys like Darnell Nurse and Matt Benning work on their puck science? There is no evidence in any way.
If nothing else, this is a money-saving move for Daryl Katz, who probably buys him a little more goodwill from fan base. To see another member of the "Old Boys Club" who seemed to be nothing but paying a check is frankly refreshing.
Coffey is now a member of Craig MacTavish and Duane Sutter as members of the Hockey Operations Department who have moved on this summer. If I were a bettor and I am, I would say that we are not completely finished yet.
