China is the world's largest electric car market. In 2018, it accounted for 56% of the global electric car sales with 1.2 million units sold.
In an effort to capture a larger percentage of this market, Tesla is building a factory in Shanghai, the first to be 100% owned by a foreign car company. Currently, Tesla supplies vehicles to Chinese customers from the US.

Tesla's primary domestic competition in China's luxury electric vehicle market is Nio, which released its first car, the ES8 SUV, in 201
Although it was first released in 2015, the Teslas Model X SUV is the company's closest competitor to ES8.
