 Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 Gearbox

The Borderlands 3 reveal yesterday was… weird. , it was really good because it was essentially 55 minutes of stalling and Randy Pitchford literally doing card magic on stage, followed by 5 minutes of trailer presentation, but that's not what I'm talking about.

I was surprised to learn … literally nothing about Borderlands 3 yesterday other than it exists and what its characters look like. The only singular of information we got about the game was not a battle royale (heh), but besides that? Nothing. This led to ill-conceived headlines like this one saying that the trailer was bad because it didn't look like anything. we know almost nothing about the game.

It does look like a relatively simple evolution of the series. New characters, old characters, new zones, old zones, four new vault hunter classes.

Borderlands 3 is nothing more than a new single-player / co-op campaign that echoes Borderlands 2 I am fully fine with that. I just think that it's weird that we didn't get a single thing about what we glimpsed in the trailer from an hour long Gearbox stage show at PAX, and now Gearbox is saying that more information will be given out on April 3, next Wednesday. Why? What information needed to be released a week from now that couldn't have been shared in that reveal? It's bizarre.

This has led to some… intense speculation about the release date of Borderlands 3 . There are three main options here:

Borderlands 3 will be released next week on April 3

This is a wild theory no doubt inspired by the fact that now that Apex Legends arrived out of nowhere without a marketing campaign to simply pop into existence and become a huge hit. The idea is that Gearbox is planning a surprise release or Borderlands 3 as soon as next week, saving them a metric ton or cash on marketing and hoping that the game simply sells itself because well, it's Borderlands 3

As much as I do this theory, I'm just not sure I buy it. Apex Legends only did this a month or two ago, and it feels too soon to play this big to copy its release concept, as something that would have been in the works long before Apex did it first. And also Borderlands 3 feels like it could be a very strong release, which leads me to…

Borderlands 3 will be released in fall / holiday 2019

This makes the most logical sense to me. April 3 they tell us it's out this year and give a bit more information. At E3 this year we get an exact date and they show off actual gameplay and stuff.

Over 200,000 people watched this excruciatingly terrible Gearbox event on Twitch alone just to see a glimpse of Borderlands 3 . This is going to be a big game and it should absolutely be able to go to pretty much anything released this upcoming holiday season. Its looter rivals, Diablo, Destiny, The Division and Anthem won''t be releasing any sequels this case, maybe just expansion. There is no new Rockstar game this year like Red Dead last year. It will be up against the likes of Modern Warfare 4 and Battlefront 3 but obviously it's a wildly different genre. A fall 2019 release seems like a powerful place for the game to land

However…

Borderlands 3 will be released in spring 2020 or beyond

Part of me wonders if… ] Borderlands 3 may not be as far as we are envisioning. I don't think that's what's happening here, but I did find it to see the trailer close as much as a release window. They might just be saving the big news for April 3 which is why they cut, but still still strange, and Gearbox has not been timely with the development of the game so far.

It's possible that this trailer was released a year ahead of release rather than months ahead, and we may have to wait a while for the game. I heard rumblings that Gearbox didn't want to show anything until they were almost ready to release, so maybe this is wrong (and I hope it is), but I'm not willing to rule it out just yet. Yesterday's trailer fields like the one you see at a Sony E3 show where the final product is still years out (a-la-The Last of Us 2). We'll know more next week, I guess.

Or hey, maybe we'll just be playing it.
