New shortage of American restaurant chains: Chicken

– Add chicken to the list of products missing these days. Bloomberg reports that the growing demand for fast food restaurants has resulted in a poultry boom across the United States. The Bojangles chain reported a “system-wide shortage” of chicken tenders this week, while industry behemoth KFC says it just manages to keep up with demand for its new chicken sandwich. A CNN story traces the origins of the tight supply back to 201

9, when Popeye introduced a chicken sandwich that went viral, quickly sold out and prompted other chains to launch their own versions. KFC’s new menu entry, for example, sells twice as fast as a typical new sandwich.

“Vendors are struggling just as much in our industry to hire people to process chicken, thus putting unexpected pressure on the amount of birds that can be treated, negatively affecting the supply of all parts of the chicken in the United States, not just wings, Says the chairman of Wingstop Inc. “Fake” chicken may be part of the solution, but not a quick one. Axios notes that while plant-based alternatives to meat are rising in popularity, plant-based “poultry” is obviously harder to produce than beef. Still, Beyond Meat plans to introduce a chicken alternative this summer. (Lab-grown meat is one thing, too.)
