Apple’s iPhone 13 series has an accelerated release schedule and some long-awaited features, but most of the excitement will be centered on two amazing design decisions. And now we can see them for the first time on Apple’s new flagship model.
In a new exclusive, massively popular YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger (aka Unbox Therapy) has obtained a detailed model of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And the highlights are about size.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Cameras – Much Larger
What immediately catches your attention is the size of the new rear cameras. While the pictures speak for themselves, Hilsenteger measured the diameter of the modules with caliber and compared them with the iPhone 12 Pro Max:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 16.99mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 14.10 mm
This is a 20% increase in size for each camera module, the biggest physical leap in iPhone history. Larger modules mean larger lenses and larger lenses provide more light, which increases image quality, especially in low or low light conditions. In addition, every iPhone 13 model is expected to benefit from these larger lenses. In particular, a recent leak of the iPhone 13 Mini design showed that the phone still only has two rear cameras, but they are also supersized.
Detailed specifications have not yet been leaked for every iPhone 13 camera, but the ultra-wide width is expected to receive the biggest leap in quality. It is tipped to move from a five-part, f2.4, fixed focus lens to a six-part, f1.8, autofocus. As ultrawide has been the worst performing iPhone camera for generations, this is a very welcome upgrade and it bodes well for similarly large leaps from the other modules.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Notch – Much smaller
The other big change for the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a much smaller notch, and Hilsenteger measured it again compared to its predecessor:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max heel – 34.62 mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max heel – 26.31 mm
This is a 30% drop in size, and while it’s not the hackless endgame that everyone wants, it’s a massive reduction for a device that packs all the components of Apple’s class-leading Face ID face recognition technology.
Apple has achieved this by moving the earpiece / speaker into the top frame of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and placing the Face ID modules directly under it. This layout does not save depth, but it does remove the entire length of the speakers from the notch.
iPhone 13 Pro Max dimensions
What has not changed much, though, are the overall dimensions of Apple’s next-generation iPhone:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 160.85 x 78.08 x 7.52 mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 160.80 x 78.10 x 7.47 mm
These measures are all within a margin of error, and somewhat surprisingly, it was a similar story with the thickness of the iPhone 13 Pro Max when it included the rear cameras (10.36 mm) compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max (10.28 mm). Button layouts were also identical, while the Lighting gate remains despite rumors of a portless model coming this year.
Needless to say, there are still plenty of holes here. Regards iPhone 13 Pro Max model can not answer questions about the hot-tipped 120Hz ProMotion monitors coming to Pro editions, the potential return to Touch ID or something about leaked internal changes that include next-generation 5G modems, boosted WiFi speeds and range, MagSafe 2.0 and greater efficiency.
On the flip side, with production of the iPhone 13 well ahead of schedule, it looks like you may only have to wait 2-3 months before Tim Cook confirms them on stage.
